CoolSculpting Science FAQs

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is the name brand for a technical, medical procedure called “cryolipolysis”. Broken down, that word literally means cold to break apart, or kill, fat. CoolSculpting is a nonsurgical approach to target unwanted, pinchable fat that’s not responding to diet or exercise using controlled cooling. It’s not a weight loss procedure, but a body contouring procedure to help sculpt trouble pockets that persist despite a healthy lifestyle.

Does CoolSculpting work?

Yes. CoolSculpting works – it’s the safest and most proven nonsurgical option for body contouring with 9 FDA cleared areas, 100+ peer reviewed scientific publications, and over 8 million treatments performed worldwide. However, you need a highly trained provider to deliver exceptional results. CoolSculpting is a tool, like scissors to a hairdresser. Results matter, choose the Experts.

CoolSculpting machines only account for about 30% of the results you see. The other 70% of the results from your treatment are a direct reflection of the provider you choose.

Is CoolSculpting safe?

CoolSculpting is a medical procedure, and there are risks and side effects involved. That said, it’s the safest and most proven technology for unwanted fat today. The risk profile is low in comparison to other procedures, like liposuction. At a free consultation, we can discuss the instance rates for all known risks for CoolSculpting to ensure you’re well informed and comfortable assuming the risk, or you can read the full patient safety data sheet here.

How is CoolSculpting performed?

CoolSculpting’s controlled cooling is delivered through customized handpieces that vary in size and shape. The handpieces are designed to follow the natural curves and contours of the body and utilize suction to draw the fat away from the body. The most up to date technology offers C-Shaped applicators that provide maximum contact with cooling panels and a more comfortable patient experience.

The equipment uses a heat extraction process to achieve hyper-controlled temperatures to the targeted area, all while monitoring the temperature of the tissue being treated for a pre-set length of time. Once the fat cells are held at that temperature for a specific length of time, a natural, programmed fat-cell death occurs and your body naturally flushes out the treated fat cells over the course of 1-3 months.

Here’s a timelapse of a full treatment to the upper back to better show how CoolSculpting is performed and what to expect on treatment day:

How was CoolSculpting developed?

CoolSculpting got it’s initial start in the 1970s after a scientific publication came out discussing inflammation in the cheeks of children who were sucking on popsicles. The “popsicle panniculitis” study was the initial research that led to the discovery of using cold to manipulate and kill unwanted fat. Research from Harvard and Massachusets General Hospital developed the science of CoolSculpting, which received it’s first official FDA clearance in 2009. Since then, over 100 peer reviewed journals have been published proving the safety and long term efficacy of CoolSculpting.

Is Coolsculpting FDA approved?

CoolSculpting is FDA cleared for the treatment of visible fat bulges in the submental (under the chin) and submandibular (under the jawline) areas, thigh, abdomen and flank, along with bra fat, back fat, underneath the buttocks (also known as banana roll) and upper arm. It is also FDA-cleared to affect the appearance of lax tissue with submental area treatments.

Where does the fat go after a CoolSculpting treatment?

After a CoolSculpting treatment, the treated fat cells undergo a natural, programmed cell death called apoptosis. The body flushes the treated fat cells out using your lymphatic system. That’s a sexy, scientific way of saying we freeze your fat and you pee, poop, and sweat it out over the course of a few months.

Sometimes people wonder about fat coming back in more *undesirable* places after a CoolSculpting treatment, which isn’t a concern as long as you go with a highly trained provider who ensures full coverage of the targeted area. You’ll still be able to gain and lose weight across the body naturally, so keep an eye on healthy lifestyle choices to best protect your results.

Are there any clinical studies to support its safety and efficacy?

Yes! There’s over 100 clinical studies showing the safety and efficacy of CoolSculpting. It’s stood the test of time, and there are studies discussing a metabolic panel after CoolSculpting, 9 year efficacy (showcasing long-term results lasting) and just about anything else you could want to know about the treatment.

What are the side effects after CoolSculpting treatments?

Normal side effects include redness, swelling, bruising and numbness. During your consultation with our team, we will discuss the instance rates and risk factors for the more rare side effects, and the action plan(s) our practice takes in case any of them occur, so you’re well informed and know exactly what to expect. Rare side effects include pain, late onset pain, paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, hyperpigmentation, frostbite, vasovagal symptoms, subcutaneous induration, demarcation, cold paniculitis, and hernia.

You can find a full list of known side effects here.

What is the difference between CoolSculpting and CoolSculpting Elite?

CoolSculpting is the original brand name, but the most up to date and proven technology as of 2022 is the CoolSculpting Elite technology. The Elite applicators and machines treat 2 areas at once, offer wider handpieces that cover 22%+ more tissue, and provide greater contact (and in turn, more aggressive results) than it’s predecessor, the CoolSculpting legacy device. Both utilize controlled cooling to deliver body contouring, but our preference is the Elite Technology.

At Element Body Lab, we offer exclusively CoolSculpting Elite for our customers because we see faster, more aggressive results with less discomfort during and after the treatment.

Is CoolSculpting permanent?

CoolSculpting results are long term. To best maintain your CoolSculpting results, maintain your weight with healthy diet and exercise. The treated fat cells are flushed out of the body after a CoolSculpting treatment and once they’re gone, they’re gone for good. Remaining fat cells left behind can still get bigger & smaller with weight gain/loss so you’ll want to continue investing in a healthy lifestyle.
