CoolSculpting Science FAQs

What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting, also known as “cryolipolysis,” is a medical procedure that harnesses cold temperatures to break down and eliminate fat. This non-surgical technique uses controlled cooling to target stubborn, pinchable fat that may not respond to traditional diet and exercise. It’s essential to understand that CoolSculpting is not intended for weight loss; instead, it focuses on body contouring to sculpt problematic fat areas, even for those with a healthy lifestyle. It’s worth emphasizing that the expertise of the treatment provider plays a crucial role in achieving optimal results.

What's the difference in CoolSculpting Elite?

CoolSculpting Elite represents the latest advancement in the CoolSculpting technology, featuring redesigned handpieces that are 18% larger and capable of treating up to 30% more tissue compared to the previous version. This enhanced design not only provides greater coverage but also allows for increased artistry on the part of the treatment provider, resulting in more customizable and precise outcomes.

Does CoolSculpting work?

Yes. CoolSculpting works – it’s the safest and most proven nonsurgical option for body contouring with 9 FDA cleared areas, 100+ peer reviewed scientific publications, and over 17 million treatments performed worldwide. However, you need a highly trained provider to deliver exceptional results. CoolSculpting is a tool, like scissors to a hairdresser. Results matter, choose the Experts.

CoolSculpting machines only account for about 30% of the results you see. The other 70% of the results from your treatment are a direct reflection of the provider you choose.

Is CoolSculpting safe?

CoolSculpting is a medical procedure, so like anything in the medical world, there are potential risks and side effects to be aware of. But here’s the cool part – it’s considered one of the safest ways to tackle unwanted fat. The risks are relatively low, especially when you compare it to more invasive options like liposuction. When you come in for your consultation with us, we’ll walk you through all the details, so you’re fully in the know. And if you want to dive deep into the nitty-gritty, feel free to check out the complete patient safety data sheet here. Your comfort and confidence are our priorities!

How is CoolSculpting performed?

How does CoolSculpting work its magic? Well, it’s all about that controlled cooling! CoolSculpting uses customized handpieces with different shapes and sizes to fit your body’s unique curves. These nifty handpieces have suction power to gently draw the fat away from your body. And the latest technology even comes with U-shaped applicators that offer maximum contact with cooling panels, making the whole experience super comfy for you.

The equipment uses a clever heat extraction process to reach precise, controlled temperatures in the targeted area. It also keeps an eye on the tissue temperature throughout the treatment. Once those pesky fat cells hang out at the right temperature for a specific amount of time, they undergo a natural, programmed fat-cell farewell. Your body then naturally gets rid of these treated fat cells over the next 1-3 months.

How was CoolSculpting developed?

The journey of CoolSculpting began back in the 1970s when a scientific study delved into the cheek inflammation experienced by kids who enjoyed popsicles a bit too much. This phenomenon, known as “popsicle panniculitis,” set the stage for the innovative use of cold to tackle and eliminate unwanted fat. It was through the collaborative efforts of researchers at Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital that the science behind CoolSculpting was meticulously developed.

This groundbreaking procedure received its very first FDA clearance in 2009, marking a significant milestone in its journey. Since then, CoolSculpting has been supported by a wealth of scientific evidence, with over 100 peer-reviewed journals showcasing its safety and long-term effectiveness.

Is Coolsculpting FDA approved?

Yes, CoolSculpting has received FDA clearance for the treatment of visible fat bulges in several areas, including under the chin and jawline, thigh, abdomen, flank, along with bra fat, back fat, underneath the buttocks (also known as the banana roll), and upper arm. It is also FDA-cleared for addressing the appearance of lax tissue in the submental area.

Where does the fat go after a CoolSculpting treatment?

After a CoolSculpting treatment, the fat cells that were treated undergo a process known as apoptosis, which is a natural programmed cell death. These treated fat cells are then eliminated from the body through the lymphatic system. In simpler terms, the fat that was frozen during the treatment is gradually eliminated from your body through natural bodily processes such as urination, bowel movements, and sweating over the course of a few months.

There’s a common concern about fat potentially returning in other areas after CoolSculpting, but this is not an issue as long as you choose a well-trained provider who ensures comprehensive coverage of the targeted area. You can still experience weight fluctuations across your body naturally, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle is important to preserve your results.

These studies cover a wide range of topics related to the treatment, including its long-term efficacy, metabolic effects, and various aspects of the procedure. So, if you’re interested in digging deeper and want to explore the scientific research behind CoolSculpting, there’s a wealth of studies available to satisfy your curiosity.

What are the side effects after CoolSculpting treatments?

Normal side effects include redness, swelling, bruising and numbness. During your consultation with our team, we will discuss the instance rates and risk factors for the more rare side effects, and the action plan(s) our practice takes in case any of them occur, so you’re well informed and know exactly what to expect. You can find a full list of known side effects here.

Is CoolSculpting permanent?

Yes, CoolSculpting provides long-term results. After a CoolSculpting treatment, the targeted fat cells are gradually eliminated from your body. Once they are gone, they do not return. However, it’s important to note that the remaining fat cells in your body can still change in size with weight fluctuations, so maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise is key to ensuring the longevity of your CoolSculpting results.
