What's the Skinny on CoolSculpting?

What is CoolSculpting? Everything you want to know.

CoolSculpting is the safest and best option when it comes to nonsurgical treatments to get rid of or eliminate unwanted fat. The CoolSculpting treatment requires little to no downtime, and the procedure itself is comfortable – allowing you to spot reduce pinchable fat without skipping a beat or missing a day of life. CoolSculpting is the name brand for a procedure called Cryolipolysis – or the scientific term for using cold to break apart and kill fat.  CoolSculpting is the gold-standard technology available on the market, with almost a decade of FDA-clearances behind it and nearly 8-million treatments performed.

Getting rid of stubborn fat can be frustrating, especially if you’re working hard on eating a well-balanced diet accompanied by regular exercise. Sometimes, it doesn’t matter how hard you work, you just have a problem area – or a place that you’ve always struggled with no matter how hard you work. For most people we talk to, there are just some areas that don’t want to burn that extra unwanted fat. If you’ve tried conventional methods (like diet and exercise) and you still have unwanted fat on the abdomen, thighs, or waist regardless of how strenuous your efforts are or how hard you work, then let’s talk about CoolSculpting.

Candidates who decide to move forward with CoolSculpting are usually active and fit, and are seeking to sculpt away a specific problem area, like their love handles, belly fat, back fat, bra rolls, post-childbirth abdomen, thigh fat, double chin, or inner thighs, just to name a few. Look at our before and after photos if you’re interested in visualizing real CoolSculpting results. (*Results can and do vary.)

How does CoolSculpting get rid of fat?

During the CoolSculpting treatment, suction pulls the tissue up away from the body, then the fat that is targeted with CoolSculpting drops in temperature until it’s cold enough to crystalize adipose (or fat) tissue. The crystallization or change in texture is what ultimately kills and kick starts the process to get rid of the fat. The body naturally processes out the frozen fat using the metabolic and lymphatic system, disposing of the fat without impacting or affecting the surrounding tissue. Most patients notice their fat reduction results somewhere between 3 weeks and 3 months, depending on a few factors. Once the fat is gone, it’s gone for good, and you can expect a fat reduction of about 20-25% of the treated area, with each CoolSculpting session.

CoolSculpting is nonsurgical, or “non-invasive”, but it does require the selection of the right tool (called the “applicator” or “handpiece”) so the fat taken away is impactful. Jessie Poole, CoolSculpting Specialist* at Element Body Lab says this is because “the fat we leave behind is what you’ll remember us by, and we want that to be meaningful.” (*Jessie works under the medical direction of Dr. Phillip Dauwe, a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in aesthetics.) Fat is hypersensitive to cold, which is why you can selectively target fat without impacting the surrounding tissue. We know this because of a few different scenarios, but our personal favorite is this one:

SCENARIO: What happens when you put a warm cup of liquid butter in the fridge overnight? IT HARDENS. What about the water right next to it? Still liquid. Fat is selectively sensitive to cold, and the CoolSculpting technology is simply relying upon that relationship.

Because we’re relying upon the body’s natural inflammatory system, lymphatic flush, and using cold as the trigger to initiate these reactions, it’s important to remember: CoolSculpting is a prescription. You can and should be seeing a medical professional to ensure you’re medically fit to have the CoolSculpting treatment.(*Jessie works under the medical direction of Dr. Phillip Dauwe, a board-certified plastic surgeon who specializes in aesthetics.)

CoolSculpting Chin results before and after

One of our most popular, yet smallest treatment areas includes the double chin. Sculpt a slimmer jawline or address unwanted volume in the chin with CoolSculpting all while avoiding surgery or downtime. See a slimmer you, just in time for your next selfie. What areas can CoolSculpting treat?

CoolSculpting is the gold standard treatment to target and kill subcutaneous (or pinchable) fat between the chin and the knees. A physical exam with a licensed medical professional is required to ensure you are an appropriate candidate. Meet with our team to learn if you’re a candidate for this fat-freezing technique.

CoolSculpting Can Address Complaints Such As

  • CoolSculpting logo

    Love Handles

Love handles describe the area around the waistline, specifically the sides of the body around the belly. Love handles are the most popular treatment area we see, especially in combination with belly fat CoolSculpting to target and kill the fat that protrudes around the pant line.

  • Double Chin

CoolSculpting can chisel a more defined chin or jawline through nonsurgical measures. The fat is eliminated through a process called Cryolipolysis, and is FDA cleared to reduce fat and improve skin laxity in the submandibular area, also known as the “double chin”. See coolsculpting chin before and after pictures by visiting our gallery page.

  • CoolSculpting logo

    Belly Fat

CoolSculpting can safely and effectively target unwanted, pinchable abdominal fat. The visceral fat that's located deeper in the abdominal cavity, below the muscle wall is not impacted by CoolSculpting. Luckily, visceral fat is easier to impact with traditional diet and exercise, so you can work on it as your homework after freezing the subcutaneous fat with us.

  • CoolSculpting logo

    Saddle Bags (Outer Thigh)

Saddlebags refer to the excess fat that can build up around the hips or outer thighs. Sometimes, fat can accumulate around the thighs, hips, buttocks or legs, depending on many different factors. CoolSculpting can freeze away unwanted thigh fat, slimming the saddle bags to create softer, natural looking curves.

  • CoolSculpting logo

    Large Hips

Body proportion is important to many women and men, especially when the hips extend to a width that is wider than desired. CoolSculpting can impact the fat deposits around the hips that can be difficult to target and remove with traditional diet and exercise.

  • CoolSculpting logo

    Bra Fat

Soft and smooth lines at the bra area can impact dramatically how you feel in a fitted shirt or dress. Bra bulges can be caused from the excess fat you can find between the armpit and chest of a woman. Bra fat can also be the complaint used to describe the visual step off caused by a tight bra. Whatever the worry, CoolSculpting can impact the flabby, pinchable tissue apparent through clothes.

  • CoolSculpting logo

    Back Fat

CoolSculpting can safely and effectively target unwanted, pinchable fat located on the back. From the shoulders all the way down, unwanted fat doesn’t stand a chance with the CoolSculpting treatment.

  • CoolSculpting logo

    Muffin Top

Muffin top is slang used to describe the body fat that bulges or spills over the waistline of clothes – specifically pants or skirts. We refer to muffin tops as love handles or flanks at Element Body Lab, but if your complaint is impacting your muffin top, we’re here to talk.

  • CoolSculpting logo

    Man Boobs

CoolSculpting can sometimes be an option for men with Gynecomastia, or the scientific term for enlarged breast tissue. Another slang description for this condition is “moobs”. Please understand that not all men who have excess tissue on the chest are ideal candidates. You’ll need to determine whether the excess or large male chest is made up of fatty tissue or excess breast tissue to determine whether the CoolSculpting gynecomastia treatment would be a good option for you.

  • CoolSculpting logo

    Inner Thighs Chaffing

CoolSculpting can chisel a more defined chin or jawline through nonsurgical measures. The fat is eliminated through a process called Cryolipolysis, and is FDA cleared to reduce fat and improve skin laxity in the submandibular area, also known as the “double chin”. Does CoolSculpting hurt?

Short answer. Generally CoolSculpting isn’t painful – there’s little discomfort at all and you can return to normal life as soon as you leave.

Honest answer. CoolSculpting uses suction and can take your breath away when applied, depending on your pain tolerance. Pain is subjective and everyone’s experience is different. You’ll be fine, and the discomfort from the “tightness” you can feel from the suction will subside after the cooling starts. Occasionally, people get dizzy or lightheaded in the first few minutes of treatment, but it’s few and far between. The cooling can be intense, like an ice pack directly on the skin for about 5 – 10 minutes. The rest of the treatment is tolerable, and often people nap or watch a movie. At the end of the treatment, the handpiece is removed and a manual massage (aka a manipulation of the treated fat) is given. It’s often people’s least favorite part about their CoolSculpting treatments.

The team at Element Body Lab describes the massage after CoolSculpting “like taking a cold foot out of a hot bath, then rubbing right on top of a bruise for a while. It’s not comfortable, but it’s not the worst thing, especially since it helps improve results!” CoolSculpting research shows that results are 60% improved from the massage, when performed the right way. CoolSculpting is pretty tolerable, but talk to your CoolSculpting provider about proper expectations during your consultation.

How many CoolSculpting treatments do I need? How long does each treatment take?

Customizable treatments mean varied cost and varied treatment time, when thinking about how long to plan for your CoolSculpting treatment day. With the CoolAdvantage Applicator, 1 “cycle” or treatment will take about 30 minutes. The number of “cycles” or treatments performed during your treatment session will vary depending on your anatomy and expectations on results.  During your consultation, discuss your goals and expectations with your CoolSculpting experience,  and ask for help on understanding your full journey.

The number of CoolSculpting sessions you’ll do will vary depending on your goal & your response rate. Most patients see an average reduction of between 20% and 25% on a bell curve. If you’re seeing a difference and the investment is worthwhile, you can opt to continue CoolSculpting until you’ve met your goal, if you’re medically fit for the treatment. You should start to notice results anywhere between 3 weeks and 3 months, depending on your metabolism. Treatment sessions are usually scheduled a minimum of 6 weeks apart.

Are there any side effects or downtime from the CoolSculpting procedure? Is CoolSculpting safe?

There are risks in every decision you make and you should meet with a medical professional to ensure you don’t have any questions regarding CoolSculpting based on your specific medical history.

Normal client experiences and coolsculpting side effects include some mild discomfort after the CoolSculpting treatment, with the ability to return to normal activity immediately. You may feel a little swollen, have some temporary redness and/or bruising. CoolSculpting is the safest option available and the procedure most often chosen by doctors for non-surgical fat-reduction.

You can read the patient safety information sheet, which discusses the rare side effects and safety profile on the CoolSculpting procedure, all of which are available for discussion with your medical provider during your initial consultation at Element Body Lab.

CoolSculpting abdomen results before and after

She combined her first CoolSculpting treatment in Dallas, Texas with weekly workouts at F45. Click here for more CoolSculpting results.

How long will it take for me to see my CoolSculpting results?

CoolSculpting results can take anywhere between 3 weeks and 3 months, depending on your metabolic process. After photos are usually taken between 8 and 12 weeks after a CoolSculpting treatment at Element Body Lab.

Everyone’s response rate is a little different, so results from CoolSculpting may be noticeable as early as 3 weeks, but most patients don’t start seeing their CoolSculpting results until about 8 weeks.

If you’re thinking about CoolSculpting, plan early. You should be thinking today for how you want to look in 3-6 months. The final transformation of the procedure can often include multiple rounds of treatment (sometimes 2-3) spaced 6-8 weeks apart. Good things take time, just like CoolSculpting results.

Patients usually say they notice a gradual reduction, or a subtle improvement over time. We love how CoolSculpting acts slow – giving your friends just enough time to wonder if you’re working it off on your own, or if you had help. The “slow” process for CoolSculpting is necessary – it takes time for your body to naturally eliminate the frozen fat, but the good news is once it’s gone – it’s gone for good.

Is CoolSculpting permanent? How long do CoolSculpting results last?

Yes. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone permanently just like in liposuction or other forms of long-lasting fat reduction. The number of fat cells you have should be fairly set in adolescence, pending a few genetic factors or hitting “critical cell size”. When you gain and lose weight, it’s fat cells getting bigger and smaller (like balloons). With CoolSculpting, we’re not shrinking the fat cells, we’re freezing and eliminating them, so once they’re gone, they’re gone for good.

Keep in mind: the remaining fat cells (CoolSculpting gets rid of 20-25% of the treated tissue, per session) can still get bigger and smaller because of weight gain and weight loss. For that reason, we recommend sticking with a healthy lifestyle including diet and exercise. Maintain your CoolSculpting results and focus on being in the best shape of your life. You’re worth it, and you should protect your investment in yourself.

How can I maintain or enhance my CoolSculpting Results?

At Element Body Lab, we recommend the trifecta effect – or when you combine your current diet and exercise plans with CoolSculpting! At different phases of life, you’ll have different goals. If your goal is to see some type of change or improvement in an area, chances are you care about how you look. CoolSculpting is safe and effective, with many FDA-clearances across the body to freeze and eliminate unwanted fat cells for good, but it’s not the end of the equation. With no surgery, no downtime, and no medications needed for CoolSculpting, you can get back to your normal life as soon as you leave our office. But that normal life should include healthy lifestyle choices. CoolSculpting works, but it’s not a free pass.

Talk with your CoolSculpting Specialist or any of our team members if you want tips on how they personally maintain a healthy lifestyle. Each of us are committed to the trifecta effect – and we all have our own approach to how to live up to this advice.

How do the CoolSculpting CoolAdvantage Applicators work and what are they used for?

What about the technology of CoolSculpting itself? Is there more than one variation? Yep – Let’s talk about the CoolAdvantage Family of Applicators, the most up to date technology available from CoolSculpting.

Research behind the mechanism of action of CoolSculpting (aka cryolipolysis or fat-freezing) started back in the 1970s, and the first FDA-Clearance for CoolSculpting was received in 2009. The technology has evolved tremendously over time! There have been multiple updates to the CoolSculpting machines, regular service and maintenance needed, and the handpieces used to sculpt away body fat have all changed tremendously since CoolSculpting’s initial launch.

Element Body Lab has only one goal – to offer the best CoolSculpting in Dallas when it comes to experience and results. That’s why we offer exclusively the most up to date CoolAdvantage applicators with all CoolSculpting treatments. The Advantage technology, designed by CoolSculpting offers a 360-degree cooling cup, with a lower risk profile, greater patient comfort, and more customizable and isolated treatment options.

Element Body Lab utilizes all the applicators within the Advantage Family, including the additional contours to customize the CoolSculpting treatment to the unique curves in each patient’s body, creating more comfort and ultimately more contact with the CoolSculpting cooling panel.

Here’s a quick view of the options available to customize the CoolSculpting treatment:

Four CoolSculpting machine heads

The CoolAdvantage and CoolAdvantage Petite applicators both offer variable CoolSculpting treatments to the core, the curvy areas of the body, and the flat areas of the body. They are our two most popular handpieces, used everywhere from the bra line to the inner thigh, the abdomen to the banana roll, and most of what’s in between.

The CoolAdvantage Plus is the largest applicator available from CoolSculpting is most often used on the abdomen but can also be used to target love handles or back fat, on the right client.

The CoolSmooth Pro CoolSculpting Applicator is most commonly used to target outer thighs, abdomens and love handles. The CoolSmooth Pro is the only applicator available from CoolSculpting that does not use suction, providing an additional adjustable option within your treatment.

The CoolMini CoolSculpting Applicator is specifically made for the double chin, knees, and bra fat. The CoolMini applicator is the smallest handpiece currently offered within the CoolSculpting family to date.

The CoolAdvantage Family of Applicators can safely and effectively cool the fat in the applicator cup at a quicker rate, which can cut the treatment time for CoolSculpting in half to about 30 minutes! (*Treatment times will vary depending on the applicator selection and the areas targeted). In addition to cutting down on time, the new CoolSculpting CoolAdvantage applicators also treat more fat by covering more surface area than the original design of the CoolSculpting technology. They’re also more comfortable and patients self-report being overall happier with results and experiences. That’s why at Element Body Lab, we’re committed to only running the most up to date technology offered by CoolSculpting, which for now is the CoolAdvantage technology.

Can I do at home CoolSculpting? Where do I buy it?

CoolSculpting machines are a prescriptive medical device in the great State of Texas. The device is sold and produced by Zeltiq, an Allergan, Inc. Affiliate, who hold the exclusive patent on the fat-freezing technology of cryolipolysis.

The CoolSculpting treatment was designed specifically for medical doctors to operate and/or delegate to appropriately trained CoolSculpting providers in a controlled environment. CoolSculpting technicians should be specially trained in this revolutionary technology and understand the safety features of the CoolSculpting machine and supplies. A qualified medical professional should also be involved to oversee any potential risks or complications that may occur during the procedure. Do us a favor and don’t try CoolSculpting at home. Leave this one to the medical professionals and their highly trained team.

CoolSculpting vs. Lipo - What to do between surgery vs. CoolSculpting?

Both CoolSculpting and liposuction target specific body areas for fat reduction. The “best option” between surgery and CoolSculpting comes down to your goals, timeline, budget, and expectations. The candidates for CoolSculpting and liposuction are often similar, so the procedures are often compared to each other.

Liposuction can be combined with a tummy tuck to add additional benefits when skin laxity is present. You can see some pretty dramatic transformations, but they come alongside being put to sleep, the need to take medications, and a few weeks of recovery. You can target about 40% or more of the fat cells with liposuction in one sitting.

CoolSculpting doesn’t involve any needles, downtime, or recovery period. Treatment times start at about 30-45 minutes, but results take somewhere at least 3-6 months, when you’re thinking about your total transformation. CoolSculpting also doesn’t target loose (or lax) skin, which is an additional thing to consider when deciding between cool sculpting and liposuction.

Another thing to consider is how expensive is CoolSculpting in comparison to surgery. The cost of liposuction is all paid up front, and results are immediate, upon recovery. The cost for CoolSculpting is paid out over a series of treatments, and results develop gradually in a staged approach. We get asked all the time “is coolScupting expensive?” and like anything else, the price can vary greatly and while not cheap, CoolSculpting is an affordable and safe option for the right candidate when considering body sculpting or fat reduction techniques.

Why you want a CoolSculpting Specialist, not a technician.

We heard this a long time ago – If you focus on everything, then nothing is important. We wanted to approach the art of CoolSculpting differently and hold the highest expectation for our CoolSculpting Specialists – to help with your comfort during the CoolSculpting experience. Choosing a provider who is focused solely on CoolSculpting ensures that all day, every day, they are refining their craft and learning how to do that one thing the best way. To keep you the most comfortable, to get the most amount of suction possible, and to know how to handle any issue that comes up along the way.

All our CoolSculpting Specialists offer expertise and insight into your treatment day and are ultimately there to offer a helping hand and excellent customer service. Each provider at Element Body Lab operates under the medical direction of Dr. Phillip Dauwe, a board-certified plastic surgeon with lots experience in body contouring. Dr. Dauwe and his team at Element Body Lab have performed hundreds of treatments together at Element Body Lab.

Element has to be one of the best CoolSculpting providers available. I have had four areas treated in the last 30 days, and I can already see subtle results in the first area I had done.

Jessie is genuinely passionate about this technology, an expert in her field, and is able to recommend the appropriate course of treatment for your unique anatomy. She performs treatment with precision and patient comfort is a top priority. The reception area is open, clean, and inviting and the treatment room itself is spacious, comfortable, and flooded with natural light. Communicating with Jessie is a breeze and scheduling is flexible with patient convenience in mind.

I previously had an area treated by a different provider in 2017. While they did not do anything wrong, the level of care and quality of service was nothing compared to what you will experience at Element. At the other place, the doctor was contacted via video call. At Element, the doctor is on site. The nurse at the other place had difficulty getting a good seal on the handpiece and her approach to placement of the handpiece was much less scientific than what I experienced at Element. The treatment room at the other place was cramped and windowless and the nurse never checked on me until the cycle concluded. Jessie will be present throughout the procedure, popping in to check on you or just staying to chat if that is what you desire! There was no follow up care at the other place aside from a printed handout and scheduling the after photo. Jessie is in touch the very next day and throughout recovery.

Element treats you like royalty!

What a great experience! First off, Jessie is awesome. She covered everything to expect perfectly, was flexabile with scheduling and never pushed me on making any decisions. She spent the day chatting with me, keeping me laughing and not thinking about any uncomfortableness due to the CoolSculpting machine. Speaking of, my procedure was no more uncomfortable than I was told to expect. The cold and tingling sensation only lasted for five minutes or less for each application, so if you're resisting CoolSculpting de to fear of pain, stop waiting and do it! My time at Element Body Lab was fantastic, and I highly recommend you check out Jessie and team. I'll report back after my procedure; I can't wait to see the results!

I was able to see results after one session, so I booked more! She definitely has made me feel more confident after having a baby. I would HIGHLY recommend her to anyone wanting to learn more about coolsculpting. It was the easiest and most Painless procedure! And it works!

Jessie has been amazing throughout this entire process. She is extremely knowledgeable, accommodating, professional and goes out of her way to ensure you get the best results (even if it means she holds the machine in place just for your peace of mind for the entire session ). I highly recommend if you are seeking Cool Sculpting you use the BEST!

Jessica more than exceeded my expectations when coming to her for my coolsculpting experience. Her studio at Lemmon Avenue is clean, bright, and very comfortable! Before my treatment, Jessica went over everything to expect during, and after the procedure, and answered every question I had. Her professionalism gave me no question in my mind that I had come to the right place! After getting the green light from one of her doctors, the experience began! I have been to another clinic for coolsculpting in the past, but nothing compares to the comfort at her studio! She made sure I was totally comfortable throughout the entire process. After I left, I received a few emails over the next week and a half from Jessica checking in on my results and what I should be expecting that day. What a nice touch! I will definitely be back in the future to see her and recommend anyone who is thinking about getting this amazing treatment done to book a consultation with her and meet her in person! She is the best of the best!
